PDXBands.com Podcast Show #8 - The Dark Prince's Playlist (Click to download the mp3)

Dracula's Playlist
Release Date: October 31st, 2005
7 songs
Dracula's classic 1931 film "Dracula" has been released on DVD in a great special edition that includes FIVE films Dracula, Dracula (1931 Spanish Version), Dracula's Daughter, Son of Dracula and House of Dracula. Buy it
1. Boom Boom Hooliganz "How the west waz 1"- These boys drop some dope beats, and when you have a dope beat rocking the castle, you can sink the old fangs into a doe-eyed beauty without her even noticing, if you know what I mean ;-). And I think you do. I mean, who doesn't like a little boom boom?
2. Straitjacket "Nowhere Tonight" - Pitchfork and Spin can debate the Godfather of Punk thing, but I think we all know who really lays claim to that throne. I mean, Neil Young? Fabulous, but he is, of course, a werewolf. That's not really very punk. And Lou Reed... Look, all I'm saying is that Gary Oldman played me and he played Sid Vicious. Do I need to draw you a map in blood? Anyway, I love the punk rock, and these guys play it catchy and loud and old school. Buy it.
3. Animal Beard "It's a Wonder"- First, the name. Yes, perhaps a little derivative of those freaks Animal Collective (who are, of course, werewolves), but totally creepy all the same. I picture a furry nape matted with gore, or maybe just wine and gargonzola and crackers. Second, this song goes absolutely everywhere, with some crazy strange vocals. No disaffected indie rock singing here. Seriously, apathetic indie rockers, sell it!
4. Scott Fisher "Tragedy Untold"- I love the introspective piano pop, and I am, by nature, a showman. As noted above, I like a singer who sells it, and I get the sense that Scott Fisher knows how to put on a show. I'd love to see it. Unfortunately, Van Helsing is also a fan. That fucker. Many a show has that guy ruined for me. Crusaders like him can never just let it go and enjoy a night out. Really, it's all garlic, crosses and stakes with him... it's worse than people so turned on by the bouncy floor at the Crystal that they pogo violently all night long. Buy it.
5. Ferocious Eagle "Rape Whistle"- Nothing makes me want to kill, er, I mean, make undead, like some prog-tastic math rock. If I was going to do us all a favor and dispose of those Crystal Ballroom pogo-ers, I would crank this on my Nano while I flew to the show. Get your twitch on, my thralls!
6. Caves "Closure" - These slightly goth pop rockers are going to be huge. They've got it all over some of their more revivalist big-time counterparts - mood AND song abound. I mean seriously, did YOU find any hooks on Antics? I tried. I really tried. Nothing. Like sucking blood from a stone.
7. Santotzin "One Drink (featuring DJ Spark)" - Clever wordplay, phat beats and drinks. Sounds like a night at Carfax Abbey. Of course I never drink... wine. Anyway, you are under my thrall, so heed the call "Get the fuck up, support local hip hop." Buy it.

Marriage Records
Marriage Records is a hidden gem among Portland's myriad labels. This year, they have blown up and released dozens of new recordings ranging from electronic and trance to folk and experimental pop. One of my favorites so far is from my friend Adrian. He has a band called Thanksgiving, and he's released 5 records just this year alone. Dude is prolific. Anyway, his new release is a self titled triple LP with three parts - "F*ck the World" (is profanity allowed on pdxbands.com?), "I Am Yours," and "Welcome Home Human." It is definitely my choice for best Thanksgiving record. Get over and check it out at marriagerecs.com! It is a legit zone for awesome recordings.
